TV presenter and baker Naomi Toilalo hopes her new bilingual cookbook will give people the chance to learn a little reo while they cook.

Whanaukai features 70 recipes for breads, slices, cookies, cakes and pastries that Ms. Toilalo originally developed for the Instagram cooking show she hosted during the pandemic.

She says common cooking words lend themselves to learning reo.

“Like stirring, stirring this, throwing that, mixing this, all of that lends itself to a very beautiful teaching of reo and so I hope it teaches people and inspires them to show how beautiful our reo is and a lot of repeat because in kauta I use a lot of the same ingredients and so people read it over and over again and I hope they can learn and absorb and enjoy our beautiful reo in the middle of a bake,” she says .

Whanauakai is available in stores and online.
