New Maori Party chairman John Tamihere said his predecessor will go down in history as one of the most successful chairman of any New Zealand political party in modern times.

He says Che Wilson, backed by a predominantly young kohanga reo generation squad, stepped up after the party was knocked out of parliament in the 2017 election.

He rebuilt from a low base to create an organization that could withstand the red wave of 2020.

“It is the only party that has taken seats from the Labor Party. It’s going to be very important that this continues because sooner or later our people will believe in themselves enough to understand that if the brown vote comes out and we are smart enough we will maintain the balance of power, as it should be said Mr. Tamihere said.

He says as chairman he will continue to rebuild the party administration and seek Maori money to fund it.
