Greens co-leader Marama Davidson said coastal communities will need more support to adapt to rising sea levels.
New research from Project NZ Sea Rise has found sea levels are rising twice as fast as expected in parts of New Zealand, putting cities at risk decades earlier than expected.
Ms Davidson says individual iwis and communities cannot be left alone to bear the costs.
“(I) feel the leadership that our iwi, marae and coastal communities will have to do to adapt to these changes and how we are going to ensure that we redistribute the wealth correctly to be able to replenish leadership at the local level,” says- she.
Ms Davidson says the NZ Sea Rise report shows why aiming to cut emissions is not enough, and it’s time to show real ambition.
