Major Broadcasters Launch NextGen TV on FiveLocal TV Stations in Albany, NY
WTEN, WRGB, WXXA-TV, WCWN and WMHT Start broadcasting with new technologies
ALBANY, NY – March 24, 2022 – Albany’s major television stations began broadcasting today with NextGen TV, a revolutionary new digital broadcasting technology. Today’s launch includes WTEN (ABC), WRGB (CBS), WXXA-TV (FOX), WCWN (CW) and WMHT (PBS).
Based on the same fundamental technology as the Internet and digital applications, NextGen TV can support a wide range of features under development. In addition to providing broadcasters with a new and improved way to reach viewers with advanced emergency alerts, NextGen TV delivers stunning video with brilliant colors, sharper images and deeper contrast to create a more realistic experience.
NextGen TV adds a new dimension to TV viewing, with dynamic video and a new Voice+ dialog enhancement that puts voices front and center. Cinema-quality sound lets viewers hear every voice clearly and maintains consistent volume across all channels. NextGen TV can also be enhanced with Internet content, allowing viewers to get the most out of live sports, live news and live events in real time, without looking away from the TV screen.
Powered by ATSC 3.0, NextGen TV is the most significant broadcast technology upgrade yet. Features available on NextGen TV vary by device and station as broadcasters roll out the service across the country.
Today’s launch in Albany follows a decade of development and months of planning and preparation by local stations. WCWN, owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, has converted to ATSC 3.0 transmissions. WCWN will air its own programming, as well as programming from other participating stations, in the NextGen TV format. All programming from each participating station will continue to be available in the existing DTV format, which all modern televisions can receive. BitPath, which develops new streaming services, led the planning process and coordinated the efforts of the five television stations.
From Seattle, Washington, to Washington, DC, and Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Coast to Folly Beach Pier on the Atlantic, the NextGen TV service is already on the air in more than 40 cities across the country . Albany viewers can learn more about NextGen TV by visiting www.WatchNextGenTV.comwhich offers a guide listing the cities currently offering the service, as well as links to the NextGen TV models available.
On-air viewers without NextGen TVs can simply rescan their TVs to ensure uninterrupted service. Rescanning instructions are available at fcc.gov/rescan. Cable and satellite subscribers do not have to do anything.
