The Ohomairangi Matariki Art and Fashion Show organizer says he wants to challenge conventional ideas about fashion and beauty.

This year, the Ohomairangi Foundation’s annual showcase took place in Rotorua with models of varying ages, sizes and ethnicity showcasing the work of seven designers.

Kharl Wirepa says colonization changed the Maori understanding of beauty.

He says Rotorua, with its history of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, was an ideal place to host the kaupapa.

“Maori standards of beauty are not measured by our physical appearance, but beauty has always been measured by mana and that is something that is inherently Te Arawa,” says Mr Wirepa.

He says that even though Ohomairangi is ruled by Maori, his kaupapa is for everyone.
