‘Loop your head in miserable shame’

For the most part, Sandiland’s fury seemed to be directed at the internal and external publicity team that works for ARN.

During the segment, Sandilands also brought in a medical expert – known as Dr KIIS – to talk about the seriousness of the virus.

“There is a small mortality rate, yes… Only a small rate, but there is a risk,” the expert told the show.

“Are you just rejecting because it doesn’t matter because they’re gay? asked Sandilands.

“Certainly not,” replied the expert.

Sandilands’ comments were branded ‘hurtful and deeply unnecessary’ by the Australian Federation of AIDS Service Organizations and drew the ire of Sydney Morning Herald columnist Andrew Hornery – who himself has come under fire for his reporting on Rebel Wilson’s homosexual relationship.

Horney said Sandlands had “deeply offended the marginalized groups” he claimed to have long championed, with the comments.

Victoria’s chief health officer, Professor Brett Sutton, also weighed in on the controversy on Twitter.

“Please remind me – what is Kyle Sandilands for? If you can’t say something constructive, maybe you’re quiet? ” he wrote.
