A merger to build trust in the media

Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson said he hoped a merger between Radio New Zealand and TVNZ could help restore confidence in the media.

The proposed merger is causing controversy, with opponents saying the new entity would distort New Zealand’s media market.

Mr Jackson says having a major public broadcaster with radio and television services is the norm in many countries.

He says the two public services are still widely recognized as sources of news, even though overall trust in the media appears to have declined and people are turning to dubious online sources.

“Youtube, Google, Netfix, TikTok, those kinds of things are real competitors and that’s a real concern for me because you end up with what we ended up in front of Parliament a few months ago with people coming down down these rabbit holes,” Mr. Jackson said

He says there are still issues to be ironed out in the merger.
